2021 Garden Planting

Beans

One full length row of bush beans is good for us. Plant half the row then wait 21 days for next half. Then plow under first bean planting when they have worn out. Replant again until 8-17.

Broccoli

Slowly succession plant along row up until 8-23. Start about 5-8 broccoli/cauliflower inside on February 13th-27th. Set outside Mar 27th.

Brussels sprouts

Start 2 plants inside in late may, then transplant in 4-6 weeks. Direct seed a couple spots 4 months before first frost. June 25th. Hestia

Cabbage

Start 4 stonehead, 2 red acre, 2 savoy inside between Jan30-Mar13. Set out Mar13-apr10. Then direct seed all year up till 7-22 for big cabbage 9-5 for baby quick growing cabbage. Might need to start fall crops inside due to summer heat.

Carrots

Plant 5 feet of carrots at a time starting in late march. Plant every 3 weeks up till 8-16. If having trouble germinating cover with a board or plant in growboxes.

Chard/Collards/Kale

Start direct seeding in early march up thru 9-25. Chard will maybe survive the heat of summer but the other two will prefer spring and fall. dedicate at least ten feet for these crops. Plant spacing 8" apart in row. Maybe no Kale, hard to digest.

Corn

Might till up a new area along the back of the yard for corn. Not sure yet.

Cucumbers

No need to go crazy with these. Direct seed starting late April thru 8-12. Most likely will plant in growboxes. General Lee did the best last year. spread out plantings by 21 days. Summer crops may get overwhelmed by bugs but later plantings may recover in fall.

Garlic

Has been planted one full half row of polish red with a few of last years volunteer garlic on the north end. In summer when the bottom leaves are beginning to yellow and when 3 - 4 lower leaves turn brown, which should be in June through August, depending on your location. Do not leave in the ground too long or bulbs will separate and rot. Dig garlic with a spading fork, being careful not to bruise the bulbs. Brush off the soil before curing and storing the bulbs. Cure in a warm, shady place with good air circulation (gentle air flow is important; do not point a fan directly at the curing bulbs). To avoid potential damage to curing bulbs, avoid high heat and direct sun. Hang in bundles or spread as a single layer on screens or drying racks. Allow to cure until the neck is dry and outer skin is papery, approximately 2 - 3 weeks. Store by braiding or tying several heads together and hanging up, or store by cutting tops off and placing bulbs in a mesh bag or open container. Keep in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place at 45 - 55°F (7 - 13°C) and 50 - 60% relative humidity. Garlic stored in the refrigerator is likely to sprout.

Head Lettuce

Start inside 3 crispino and 3 salanova seeds starting feb 6. Set out mar 13. Plant a few head lettuce every 2 weeks throughout the year 12" apart. Dedicate about 20' of row to it.

Leaf Lettuce

Peppers

feb 27th start inside one or 2 of each pepper seed. plant out apr 24. dont go overboard.

Potatoes

Plant red potatoes st patricks day 10-15' feet of row. Plant the rest of the row with a good storage potato in April. Small, "new" potatoes can be harvested beginning about 7-8 weeks after planting. Main crop tubers are harvested in fall. After foliage has died back, leave tubers in the ground for 2 weeks to set skin. Dig tubers, brush off soil, and allow skins to dry before storing. Store in a cool but not freezing 40°F (4.4°C) dark, humid place.
